haiti a biblical perspective

i was reading an entry in al mohler’s blog where he talks about the recent tragedy in haiti, the responses to that tragedy, and how we should view it in a biblical context. here’s some of that post:

“Does God hate Haiti? That is the conclusion reached by many, who point to the earthquake as a sign of God’s direct and observable judgment.”

“God does judge the nations — all of them — and God will judge the nations. His judgment is perfect and his justice is sure. He rules over all the nations and his sovereign will is demonstrated in the rising and falling of nations and empires and peoples. Every molecule of matter obeys his command, and the earthquakes reveal his reign — as do the tides of relief and assistance flowing into Haiti right now.”

“The earthquake in Haiti, like every other earthly disaster, reminds us that creation groans under the weight of sin and the judgment of God. This is true for every cell in our bodies, even as it is for the crust of the earth at every point on the globe. The entire cosmos awaits the revelation of the glory of the coming Lord. Creation cries out for the hope of the New Creation.

In other words, the earthquake reminds us that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only real message of hope. The cross of Christ declares that Jesus loves Haiti — and the Haitian people are the objects of his love. Christ would have us show the Haitian nation his love, and share his Gospel. In the midst of this unspeakable tragedy, Christ would have us rush to aid the suffering people of Haiti, and rush to tell the Haitian people of his love, his cross, and salvation in his name alone.”

last week chooch talked about what true community is going to cost. it isn’t always easy, but God’s loves all of us and we need to work towards a place were we do too. it’s funny because we shot sam’s video before i talked to chooch about his message. they kind of lined up pretty nicely. check it out below, and go to our vimeo page for all of the generation videos.

last night was great. it was awesome to see such a big turnout, and to see everyone being comfortable together. the worship team did an awesome job of bringing us into God’s presence, and Chooch brought the word challenging us to be a part of something greater than ourselves. check out the sermon below. or go to the sermon section on our website to subscribe and get the sermons every other week.

tonight is the first generation meeting ever. come at 730 for coffee and conversation. 8-9 is our service time where we will enter into worship and hear the word. bring friends and come with open hearts for what God’s going to do in you this year.

video outakes: neal nemeth

our first location for shooting neal’s promo video was the broken down train in bay. you know, the one that’s been there for over two years now? neal, stephen politte, and myself walked out to the train and set up to shoot the video. it took me a second to set up the camera, make sure the microphone levels were set, check my framing, and then we started. stephen asked neal the first question and he gave a great answer. it was insightful, thought provoking, solid. then he asked him another question. the wind started blowing loudly and i couldn’t hear anything out of the microphone so i called “cut” and stopped the camera. just then stephen turns around and points behind me. three of bay village’s finest are walking straight towards us. we were busted. and i didn’t even have the common decency to start the camera back up and film the entire thing. that would have been an outtake.

instead we moved locations and you’re stuck with this one…

documentaries, art, and the detroit shoreway

for those unaware, the detroit shoreway is a really cool place. there’s interesting shops, great coffee at gypsy, a public theater, and quite possibly the thing i’m most excited about; the new documentary, foreign, and independent movie theater at the old capitol theater. it’s an area under great reconstitution. and it’s exciting. they’re trying to bring out the artistic side of cleveland.

as a christian, i find myself often wondering how we should stand on art and film and the ilk. often when we look at secular art we are quick to dismiss it as something unholy. as something that isn’t worth our time of day, because the person that created it wasn’t saved. their motives affect our perception. and yet i’m reminded time and time again of how God always uses people who don’t believe in Him to further His kingdom.

i love to see the way art can transform something. the way a new bus stop can speak volumes about the people in the community and where that community is heading. i have to think that God is in the art of those who don’t believe in Him. He gave us such an amazing capability to create beautiful things, with the intention that those things glorify Him. sometimes they’re created with that purpose, and it’s great. sometimes they’re not, and when that happens it is on us as christians to view that creation through our biblical perspective. i have to believe that God’s glory can be seen in anything, even things that were never intended to show that glory.
